What type of martial arts do you do?!
hey all, just wondering what type you do, why and who/what got you into it.
I do Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). I got into it for both fitness ( I used to be fat, now i'm "Cut" abs and all stoked as), Fighting (Ever since i was small i liked fighting, it fascinated me) self defence (... obvious that one). I got into it after my mate telling me bout it. My favourite fighter is Ramon Dekkers, the dutch born fighter "The Diamond". Such speed, agility, power, determination etc. If you don't know what muay thai is, here's a video to it (Please tell me what you think of it!!!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3R4xtjl5b4 Of course it is of ramon dekker
P.S. Please have no OMFG [martial art] owns [martial art], look at it as fighter vs. fighter, not style vs style. thanks!

many, many years ago, when Dodo's still roamed the earth, I did Judo. Then I realised the sport was a sport, and had little to do with practical self-defense.

I did many martial arts, just to improve my skills for competition.
I started with Shaolin Kempo, which i did 10 years. I'm a first degree black belt in it and was a teacher. was European champion for 2 years
Then i switched over to Freestyle Combat. Its basically an all-round fighting system wich allows everything (punching, kicking, throwing, grappling, locking,...)
I did that for 3 years, got a blue belt and was sideline coach for 1 year.
I became champion in our federation for a year, and got invited to join a grappling tournament to compete with the "proffesional" grapplers (mostly brazilians). Ended on 5th place. My Sensei and his best friend entered as well, but in the Heavy weight class and ended 1st and 2nd. Both are incredibly experienced and strong as hell. My Sensei has 25 years of fighting experience and got only beaten 2 times. His friend is a Krav Maga teacher in the army and is reigning Judo champion in the army for 6 years now.
During my Combat period i also did Judo (to increase my throwing and ground fighting capabilities (ne-waza)) for 1 year. Got an orange belt, but got kicked out of the club because of a discussion with the son of the trainer. He was reigning Belgian champion in the middleweight division. The discussion turned to a more physical aspect when he attacked me. I gave him a concussion, a broken jaw and a dislocated arm. putting him out of the training and competition for about 6 months...
Its a scary result, when a trained person gets cornered and has to rely on his reflexes...
I quit martial arts now and try to focus myself on bodybuilding and powertraining.
The reason i started martial arts: I used to be a big fan of the UFC and Pride fights. Those guys have almost no rules and fight for their lives in that octagon. That is probably THE most realistic resemblance u can have to a real life streetfight, and imo the only way to learn to defend yourself and develop any kind of reflex. Thats why i entered only the competitions why have a similar ruleset, but they were semi contact, light contact or skin-touch...never full contact.

I started Karate when I was 5 after I was invited to go along with my next door neighbour, he was the same age at the time. We started going together for a while, then he moved away, and I kept it up. This is probably not what it's called now, but I kept going until the level of "senior blue" or something like that, it was basically the level beyond a whole singly coloured belt, like going though them again only at a higher level. Mine was a brown belt onto which I sewed a strip of coloured ribbon of the level I'd advanced to, so I had yellow, (orange? can't remember lol, lost the belt in the house somewhere), red, green then blue. It's true however when they say you don't regret something until it's gone, in this case my chance to become a black belt , if I'd stayed at it I would have been a black belt well by now. But I got quickly bored with the same constant crappy routine of doing basic punches and kicks that I already knew how to do and how to do well, that I quit. I also can't remember the style of the Karate I did either lol.
Edit: The video is awesome btw, that's how to f*** someone up .

learned martial arts from my father. his style is a personally develped style that is a derivative of various shaloin elements mixed with tae kown do and wing tsun fists. i mainly started to learn it because i was felt martial arts would further my chinese heritage.

I was learning a style called Lima Lama (yes serious name) for just over a year. Unluckily our teachers moved back to Guatemala, otherwise I still would be training. We were actually lucky to have trained with our Master because in Guatemala he was well known and generally only personally trained the higher ranks. We were good friends with his son, and so when they moved here for awhile we got to train with them both daily for about a year. He went on to form his own style called Gamale Lama.
It's hard to find really good, quality teachers in some areas. We did alot of local competitions and did really well in our class ranks. I was an orange belt moving on to purple when they left, and wish I could have kept training. (they did white, white/yellow, yellow, yellow/orange, orange, orange/purple and so on) I need to find another good school.... Muai thai is an incredible style; I enjoy watching Thai fights and wouldn't mind training in that style myself.
Here's some videos I found of lima lama...
This one our teacher is the guy that in officiating in the background. Little bit of sparring.

This video is much better... shows a bunch of forms, and a little of this and that. Our Master (now a Grand Master) is featured in alot of the video.

anyway hope ya enjoy

i have created a new martial art
Bagel jit soo
involves wielding bagels skillfully pros will wield up to 7 bagels at once using trhem as boomerangs and melee weapons
rules.
the player with no bagels left loses
the opponent must try to disarm all his opponents bagels..however many bagels he disarms he gets that number of bagels from the bagel tray.the loser however , get no bagels

Yes I was taught this style some years back. I love the history and the style. Futhermore you are right, I can't find something that blends so well with their forms in other martial art styles. Sad that all of them left the area, and move quite frequently.

I'm guessing that since your profile says Cali that is where you trained. Who was your Master when you did Lima Lama? Kinda surprised as generally when I mention the style it just gets laughs (llamas what?.. that kinda stuff) and it's not a very well known style either. I really liked it though.

I do Hap Ki Do, and have taught it for about 8 years. It is sort of a cross between Tae Kwon Do and Ai Ki Do. My son does Tae Kwon Do, in our school you have to be at least 14 to do Hap Ki Do, too dangerous. Funny thing is, I never had a broken bone in my life, until I decided to learn to defend myself. Then I broke 2 ribs, all my fingers, half my toes, dislocated my jaw...So much for protection.

I practice Deja Fu, a martial art that makes your opponent feel that they have been kicked in the head this way before.
